We’re a sucker for utilizing functional tools when decorating our homes, and these rustic antique primitive wooden bread shovels are no exception. Also known as a bread peel or bread paddle, the beautiful timeworn patina of these bread shovels will give your modern home a warm and cozy feel.

History of the bread peel: A peel is a shovel-like tool used by bakers to slide loaves of bread, pizzas, pastries, and other baked goods into and out of an oven. It is usually made of wood, with a flat carrying surface (like a shovel's blade) for holding the baked good and a handle extending from one side of that surface. The word peel is derived from the French “pelle,” which means shovel, and the tool has been used by many different cultures for hundreds, if not thousands of years. The peel is such a revered tool for bakers that the patron saint of bakers St. Honoré himself is often pictured holding the ancient tool along with a few loaves of crusty French bread nearby!
