18th Century Swedish Gustavian Corner Cabinet
A petite one-piece hörnskåp, or corner cupboard, from rural Sweden, crafted in pine and retaining a softly weathered surface of white and pale blue-green paint. Its triangular top and shallow depth were designed to fit neatly into the corner of a small room, a practical solution in late-18th-century Swedish homes where space and light were carefully preserved.
The single door features a reeded panel, an understated Gustavian detail inspired by classical fluting during the reign of King Gustav III. Inside, simple shelves once stored tableware, candles, or household goods, allowing walls to remain open for windows and the central hearth. Common in farmhouses and cottages, these compact cupboards provided essential storage without overwhelming modest interiors.
Found in Sweden, circa 1790
The cupboard is of solid pine construction
The cupboard has been lightly dry-scraped with remnants of the original paint highlighting the piece
Original steeple point hinges and a petite bronze knob are present; no other hardware remains
Areas of wear with scratches are present throughout, consistent with age and use
The cupboard is solid and sturdy; however, it does possess a slight lean
As with many antique pieces, the door requires a gentle lift when closing to align properly
Approximately 41” W x 23.75” D x 44.25” H
Available for pick up, local delivery, and nationwide shipping.
This item requires either freight shipping or white-glove delivery service.
