Convent Garden Bench
A unique, long and lovely handcrafted garden bench found at the, now abandoned, Monastery Avé Maria de Pélichy, in Izegem, Belgium. This garden bench features beautiful carved detailing covering each of the ends, and a chippy, timeworn patina. As a place of rest, it has no doubt heard many a story over the years and yearns to be given a new life helping create long-lasting memories of watching sunrises and sunsets.
History of the Monastery of the Sisters of Mary: Up until the end of the 19th century, the Sisters of Mary were not allowed to sit and rest outside during the day. As that rule was lifted, a confessional was taken down in the chapel of the nunnery, and a local carpenter was tasked to build a (now allowed) resting bench with the salvaged parts. From that point on, this beautiful chippy paint bench sat facing south, overlooking the convent’s vegetable garden, as the perfect place of respite for the nuns.
Found in Belgium, circa 1870
Handcrafted from wood
Layers of green and white paint are chipping away resulting in a beautiful patina
Front portion of bench’s seat and center foot has been repaired and replaced with newer wood (as found, a long time ago)
Overall wear consistent with age and use
Overall measurements approximately 136” L x 21” W x 38” H
Available for pick up, local delivery, and nationwide shipping.
