Early 19th Century Swedish Gustavian Corner Cabinet

$5,200.00

Painted pine corner cupboard from Sweden’s later Gustavian period, featuring a curved front and classic two-part construction. The surface retains traces of original blue paint, worn back over time to reveal the pine beneath and create a richly layered patina.

The doors feature vertically reeded panels, reflecting the influence of Neoclassical design as it transitioned into the early 19th century. An open arched niche between the upper and lower cabinets adds both visual interest and function, originally used to display pewter, ceramics, or a household light source.

Designed to fit neatly into a corner, cupboards such as these were practical storage solutions in Swedish homes, maximizing space while keeping walls open for windows and hearths. Crafted in pine using local materials, the light-painted finish helped brighten interiors during long winters.

  • Found in Sweden, circa 1800 - 1830

  • The cupboard is of solid pine construction

  • Areas of wear with minor scratches are present throughout, consistent with age and use

  • The original skeleton key and lock are present

  • Upper lock catch is functional and helps keep doors in place; doors stay closed when the cupboard is level

  • Lower lock is present but loose and does not fully secure the doors

  • The cupboard is solid and sturdy; however, it does possess a slight lean

  • Approximately 49” W at bottom x 42” W at top x 24” D at top x 28.125” D at center x 79.125” H overall; 40.25” H at center
