Dating to the Louis XVI period (1774–1792), this pair of reclaimed French cupboard doors features paneled construction with distinctive incised X-detailing and softly shaped upper panels. Their restrained ornamentation reflects the transition from the more decorative Louis XV style toward the cleaner lines of the Louis XVI period.
Layers of timeworn gray paint and visible wear across the surface give the doors wonderful depth and character, while their compact scale makes them ideal for enclosing a built-in cabinet, pantry, or other custom millwork. Original iron hardware and the beautifully imperfect surfaces speak to more than two centuries of use.
Salvaged in France, circa 1780
