Sold

A lot of reclaimed Victorian encaustic, solid “black” cement tiles.

Found in the English countryside, the lot of tiles have a beautiful natural patina with a variation of color due to their age and original use. The lot of tiles are a mix of early manufactured tiles, with some having stamps on the backside. A few are stamped by the esteemed “Minton Hollins & Co.”, tile manufacturers located in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, who began making encaustic tiles in the 1830s.

  • Tiles have been brushed off, but not scrubbed or chemically treated

  • Tiles could be left as-is or a penetrating sealer could be applied to not only protect the tiles but to darken and richen the colors

  • Good overall condition. Small chips, losses, light staining, and surface wear, consistent with having been used and reclaimed.

  • Overall, the tiles have clean joint lines, but there is cement residue on the backsides of some (not all) tiles. May need to be removed before installation.

  • Suitable for indoor floors, most wall applications, wet areas, and exterior patio flooring

  • Tiles have been packaged into 18, 6x6 boxes for ease of shipping and management

  • Each tile measures approximately 6” W x 6” D x .25” H

  • There are 189 pieces in the lot, approximately 47 SF
