Reclaimed European Encaustic Tiles, 98 SF
Rare lot of handmade antique cement tiles reclaimed from a 19th-century home in Europe. Worn by generations of footsteps, the softly faded colors and timeworn surfaces bring an authenticity impossible to replicate with newly made materials. Reclaimed tiles like these instantly lend depth, texture, and an old-world feel to modern spaces. Their imperfections, tonal variation, and visible history are exactly what make them special.
Unlike glazed tile, encaustic tile is created by hand-pouring pigmented cement into molds before being compressed under immense pressure. The result is a remarkably durable surface that wears beautifully over time rather than fading away. Originating in the south of France in the mid-1800s, cement tiles—often referred to as encaustic, Victorian, Mission, or Cuban tiles—remain one of the most enduring decorative materials of the period.
Late 19th-century, European
Each tile is approximately 7 3/4” and 3/4” thick
The lot includes 235 pieces
The lot is approximately 98 square feet in total
Approximately half of the tiles in the lot are “Light” in color, and half are “Dark”, so a subtle checkerboard pattern could be laid (as shown). Or they could be laid in strips, or mixed randomly for a wabi-sabi organic feel.
Every piece of tile has been washed by hand, but not chemically treated. Once installed, these tiles could be treated if a more consistent and cleaner look is desired.
The backs are fairly clean, but there is some mortar, as expected
Good overall condition. Small chips, scratches, light staining, and surface wear are consistent with having been used and reclaimed
Suitable for indoor floors, most wall applications, wet areas, and exterior patio flooring
Available for pick up, local delivery, and nationwide shipping.
This item requires either freight shipping or white-glove delivery service.
