Reclaimed French Cement Tiles, 7 SF

$0.00
Sold

A rare lot of handmade cement tiles removed from a 19th-century chateau in the south of France. There is no better way to achieve an old-world weathered look in a modern home, than using reclaimed materials.

Cement tiles are made with pigmented cement (concrete) that is hand-poured into decorative molds until it sets. The tile is then removed and compressed under 2000 pounds of pressure. Unlike glazed patterns, which sit on the surface, cement patterns are the make-up of the tile, so the pattern won’t wear off over time. Cement tile was first made in the south of France in the mid-1800s. It’s also known as Victorian, Mission, or Cuban tile and commonly referred to as “encaustic” tile. These antique tiles are thick, heavy in weight, and extremely durable.

  • Tiles are approximately 8” x 8” x 1”

  • Lot includes 16 pieces, 12 pieces are in excellent condition (considering their age), and 4 pieces have minor chipped edges, rough corners, and/or staining.

  • The lot is approximately 7 square feet in total

  • *Please note that the lot of 16 pieces does not include the solid black cement tile shown in the photos. The solid black cement tiles are sold separately.

  • Every piece of tile has been washed by hand, but not chemically treated. Once installed, these tiles could be treated if a more consistent look is desired.

  • Good overall condition. Small chips, losses, light staining, and surface wear consistent with having been used and reclaimed.

  • Clean joint lines, but there is a considerable amount of cement residue on the backsides. May need to be removed before installation.

  • A penetrating sealer is recommended, not only to protect the tiles but to darken and richen the colors.

  • Suitable for indoor or outdoor flooring, most wall applications, and wet areas

  • *Please note that tiles shown in the photos are not installed. They have been casually laid on gravel to show the pattern in its entirety

Available for pick up, local delivery, and nationwide shipping.
