(Set of 11) 18th Century Rag Paper Books
An 11-volume set of Lettres Angloises, ou Histoire de Miss Clarisse Harlove, printed in Paris in 1777, just years before the French Revolution. Translated from Samuel Richardson’s famed English novel Clarissa, this French edition was published by Les Libraires Associés and printed on handmade rag paper, each volume wrapped in its original tan paper cover.
The books retain their uncut edges and delicate thread bindings, with handwritten volume numbers still visible on the spines. Pages are soft, fibrous, and feathered at the edges—hallmarks of 18th-century rag paper. The set bears evidence of time and handling, with ink markings, small tears, staining, and creases all indicating its age and authenticity.
A striking and sculptural collection, whether lined up on a shelf or displayed with pages open to reveal the type and texture of a bygone printing era. These volumes are both decorative and historically significant.
Found in Paris, France, 1777
The set includes a total of 11 rag-paper books, containing volumes 1, 3, 5 - 11, 13, and 14
Books are tattered and show signs of wear, bearing tears to the covers and light staining
Overall condition is consistent with age and use
The set of books measures approximately 10” W x 4.25” D x 7” H when standing together in a row
